About

George Benwell Bio

WoodBeGood is one of my passions - relaxation, design, creativity, craft business and hobby all rolled into one. I am a self-taught wood craftsman who is inspired by wood and design creativity. I continually think of objects in our world and how I can take that reality and turn it to the abstract of shape, design form and function.

"WoodBeGood is just me and solitude in space, imagination and some, mostly mature, wood working tools."

The inspiration for the name comes from my long departed darling mother – her repeated verbal wishes to me many many decades ago come echoing back – “Georgie, I wish you would be good!” All these years later, I hope my mum is watching as I try to heed her caring instructions.

WoodBeGood started in the garage of my Dunedin home about 2014. Out went the car, and in came machines and wood, woodchips, dust and tools. Here in 2021, the activity has outgrown the space as an ever-increasing larder of wood, tools and products overflow the space. I am shortly moving out into the corner of a warehouse in an industrial precinct of the Dunedin harbour. No fancy shingles nor advertising out front, just enjoyable noisy pursuits behind closed industrial doors.

WoodBeGood will create something for you, either by appointment, through purchase off the product list, or about three times a year, at selected craft markets across New Zealand. I can dispatch products worldwide to your doorstep provided there are no import and customs restrictions on wooden products.

I value design, form and function of natural materials into useful repurposed products. I strive for perfection, openness and honesty. I believe I sell – you buy - art in wood as a true life story.
